Ups and Downs of 2023

It’s important to reflect on what went well so you can keep on doing it. lt’s also vital to know what went wrong so you can avoid it in the future.

Turnover increased 48% without rates going up. Most of this was an increase in 1:1 coaching and several corporate clients in November and December. The 1:1 clients has been following me for 3-6 months, in some cases years before getting in touch. The corporate clients were personal recommendations from people I had strong relationships with. This is why relationships and helping others are so important in business. The good you do always comes back to you.

Profit was only up 12% since I invested heavily in a new website a speaker trailer , paid myself a bigger salary, gave more to charity and lost money hiring a book PR company.

My TEDx talk  How Vulnerability Changed My Life, failed to take off. All those dreams, all the hard work, it still hurts that it didn’t connect with a bigger audience. It’s the most nervous I’ve ever been on stage, since I knew half the audience and it was in my hometown. You can watch it here

Despite 31,000 followers on LinkedIn and people engaging with my content and hiring me for coaching and speaking, my 3rd book, Business Growth: Lessons Learned From Divorce, Dating and Falling In Love, failed.

2 years of my life, a huge investment and it only sold 1,800 copies, despite featuring on Forbes, Fortune, BBC and many high-profile websites. My confidence took a massive battering and I lost faith in myself for a while. I am still incredibly grateful to everyone for buying my book and for your kind Amazon reviews.

Continued to work with two of my competitors which is cool. Spoke at 6 events thanks to my LinkedIn connections recommending me. In 2019 and 2020 when I was struggling, I asked so many people for help. I felt honoured that many of them are now approaching me for advice and I’m more than happy to help.

Attended 4 funerals. 1 of them I went to school with, the rest were friends of my parents. When this happens, especially former school friends, it makes you more aware of your own mortality and appreciate everything you have.

IBS slowed me down and was diagnosed as wheat intolerant as well. Like anything new and disruptive, it causes extreme discomfort. I invested more in private healthcare to really understand my gut and brain and more in tune now.

Worked more on my emotional intelligence and mindset than ever. Haters did not affect me and apart from getting sidetracked a few times from comparisonitis, I had massive focus which helped me achieve more.

Visited Dublin 4 times, (Springsteen, St Patrick’s Day, delivering LinkedIn Training and seeing clients) Donegal 3 times on weekends away, 3 trips to London to deliver sales training and see clients, 2 trips to LinkedIn HQ and a lovely holiday in Corfu, Greece.

Charity work

Raised £901 for Movember, this was my 2nd year as their ambassador. Donated to 45 LinkedIn connections who were fundraising for various causes. Bought tickets for Sense NI Charity Ball and a table at the NI Hospice Charity Ball below where I invited clients and friends. In 2024, I plan to go bigger with charity work, although not worked out how yet.
